Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program

We get so much feedback from principals, parents and of course from the students themselves, about how popular this is and how it’s changing children’s attitudes towards fresh food. If they have developed that understanding and willingness to expand their horizons as far as food goes, and understand what goes on in the garden and how that food has got on their plate, those insights and understandings will be there for life.

Victory is one of 800 Australian schools delivering the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden (SAKG) program, which promotes hands-on food education, flavour and fun. Our Year 3 and 4 students enjoy growing veggies, preparing seasonal recipes with their harvest and then tucking into the delicious, freshly-cooked fare at the end of the class. Parent helpers are a welcome and valued part of the SAKG classroom and the fun had by all is contagious.

Asset Learning Program Sakgp 1

Students are given all the skills, experiences and role modelling they need to learn to love their veggies and make healthier choices about what to cook and eat, for life. Pleasurable food education encourages critical thinking, teamwork, an understanding of cause and effect, and increased levels of observation.
